Air Conditioning FAQs

What is a Split System?

A split system is made up of 2 main components often described as high wall split. Indoor unit mounted on a wall. Outdoor unit placed in a suitable location.

How do I know what size unit I need?

The size of the air conditioner required depends on many factors.

Some of these include the size of the room/s, current insulation in floors, walls and the roof, the type of material used in the construction of the property, the number of windows and there efficiency, how many people are usually in the room / dwelling and also how you want to use your air conditioner.

We recommend you discuss your needs with us so we can provide advice and options on the best unit to meet your requirements.

The correctly sized air conditioner will not only be the most efficient, it will provide optimal performance for you over the coming years.

How long does the install take?

The time taken to install a new air conditioner depends on many different factors. Installing a split system air conditioner will generally take between 3-4 hours per system.

This time can increase up to 6-8 hours depending on the layout and complexity of the installation.

A ducted air conditioner install will usually take up to two (2) full days. Again, this depends on the layout and complexity of the ductwork installation.

If your required install is not straight forward or we can foresee some challenges that may cause the installation to take longer than expected, this will be discussed with you during the estimate / quoting process.

Should I have my air conditioner serviced?

Yes! Maintenance services will ensure maximum performance from your air conditioner and prolong its life.

Having your home air conditioned is a significant investment and it is important your investment is installed by a licensed technician.

Manufacturers offer a 5 year warranty on most residential systems and we recommend an annual service to maintain this warranty.

Which air conditioning units are the best?

Your air conditioning requirements will determine what brand and type of unit that you will need.

What is the difference between a split system A/C & a ducted system?

As the name split system, the main components of a split system are split between the interior and the exterior of the building.

The condenser (the outdoor unit) is located outside in a split system install.

The evaporator (the indoor unit) is mounted normally high on a wall inside the home / building.

The condenser and the evaporator are connected by insulated pipework and electrical cables.

Each indoor unit is generally intended to only condition a single room or space.

The split systems are normally a cheaper option than a ducted system and can be installed in one room at a time.

With a ducted system, the main components are still separated like a spilt system, however the evaporator is normally concealed in a ceiling cavity or under the floor.

Conditioned air (either heated or cooled) is then carried through concealed ductwork to vents into number of rooms (or zones) throughout the property.

Ducted air conditioning is generally seen as a whole house air conditioning solution.

It is a more expensive option than individual split systems, however is generally more visually appealing and can have the ability to provide different temperature air and air flow into several zones at once through a central control point.

There are many more finer differences between the two (2) types of air conditioners, please call us to find out more!

Which system will be more suitable?

Both air conditioning systems can achieve the goal of heating or cooling your space, albeit in different ways.

The suitability will depend on the type of property you reside in, your budget, how many rooms who want to air condition, the aesthetics and the functionality you would like from your air conditioner.

A site visit from one of our qualified and licensed technicians or our estimator can help you make the best decision on what air conditioning unit is right for you.

Are a/c units noisy?

Current air conditioners are now extremely quiet during operation.

If your air conditioner is not as quiet as it used to be or it makes a strange noise you haven’t heard before, it may be time for a service/inspection by a trained and fully qualified technician.

Are A/C units expensive to run?

Modern technology used in air conditioners today mean the current makes and models are now more efficient than ever before.

When used consistently and set to a practical temperature, a regularly maintained air conditioner is quite efficient.

Using an air conditioner to its maximum potential is definitely going to increase its power usage, however this often much less than expected.

How often should I service my A/C?

Your air conditioning system/s, just like a car, require regular maintenance to ensure its ongoing performing and to prolong its usable life.

We recommend having your air-conditioners serviced annually.

There are instances where this timeframe may need to be shorter (more frequent servicing) depending on the system usage and conditions.

What temperature should my aircon be at

This question is usually driven by two (2) main factors: comfort and efficiency.

In terms of comfort, it ultimately comes down to personal preference.

This temperature is normally found by trial and error.

Different brands and models, different types, room sizes and even what room it is can affect the way a room feels.

It is important to keep in mind that some people tend to feel the heat or the cold more than others.

Examples of this include the young, the elderly as well as other factors such as health conditions.

From an energy efficiency point of view, between 23-25 degrees during the warmer summer months and 20-22 degrees during the cooler winter period allows for the most efficient use of your air conditioner.
