Electrical Safety Is Not Optional — And It’s Not Always Obvious

Recently, our NBTNS Electrical Division attended two separate sites in the Toowoomba region
one for routine service and testing, and another for the installation of new electrical equipment.

On both occasions, our technicians identified critical failures in electrical protection devices:

  • In one case, equipment remained live after isolation
  • In another, both the equipment and its metal enclosure were energised at 240V

These are extreme safety risks not only to tradespeople, but to staff, occupants, families, and the general public.

What makes this especially concerning is that the protection devices appeared to operate correctly when tested using the trip/test button yet the circuits were not actually de-energised.

This is a critical reminder:
Pressing the test button on the safety switch does NOT guarantee an electrical circuit is safe.

Why This Matters

At NBTNS, we follow a stringent, multi-step testing and verification process not assumptions.
That process is what prevented serious injury or worse on these sites.

Unfortunately, not all electrical faults are visible.
And not all failures announce themselves until it’s too late.

The Takeaway

- Regular electrical testing and maintenance is essential

- Protection devices can and do fail

- Assumptions can be dangerous

- Proper verification saves lives
